Naomi House Children's Hospice
"A Saviour for Women"
Kate is 16 years old and has been going to Naomi House in Hampshire for support since 1999. She has congenital muscular dystrophy, a lifelimiting condition. She is a bright, intelligent, self motivated and friendly girl, who knows her own mind. Kate has various interests including socialising with friends, playing the game Boccia, trips out to the cinema, ice skating, photography and craft work. She helped to design the new garden planned for jacksplace, the young adults unit attached to Naomi House.
Kate said that she didn't have a hero as such but thought that most people, especially women, love chocolate. She decided to photograph a box of Heroes chocolates.
After purchasing the chocolates, Kate worked with her team of carers to get the exact image she was hoping for. She instructed the carers to cover some unused boxes with a sheet and place the box of Heroes at an angle in front of it. Chocolates were then arranged in the foreground. Kate described the camera shot she was trying to achieve and the carer lined up the shot. A few adjustments were made before Kate got the shot she was after. She then decided on the title and chose the backing card to complete the piece.
