Iain Rennie Hospice at Home

"My Brother Will"

Sophie is 12 years old and lives with her parents and older brother. Sophie has San Filippo, a mucopolysaccharide disease. Despite the progression of her condition and the many problems this brings, she remains a happy contented young lady who likes nothing more than lots of cuddles and attention and anything musical. Sophie attends a local school that caters for her many needs. She has lots of friends and participates in various social activities including swimming and trampolining.

Sophie has been cared for by the Pepper Children's Nurses for over seven years, providing specialist nursing support and short breaks at home. During this time, they have offered ongoing support to her family, during some very difficult times as they have come to terms with Sophie's diagnosis and dealt with the challenges that her frequently changing needs have brought.

Sophie's hero is her adoring brother Will, who at 14 years old is quite a fan of his little sister. Currently, his trendy hairstyle is quite striking, hence the representation of this in his portrait. When Will was younger he also received support from the Pepper nursing team children's support facilitator as he too adjusted to the impact of Sophie's diagnosis.
