Elliott

Age 14

East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) - Milton

"Shrek"

Elliott is 14 years old. Elliott has Crouzon's syndrome, a genetic disorder where skull bones fuse prematurely. Because of his condition Elliott has been blind since he was five years old and has a tracheostomy to help him breathe.

Elliott loves art and couldn't wait to get involved with This is my hero at East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) in Milton.

Because Elliott is blind he used his sense of touch to feel a Shrek mask from the hospice dressing-up box and then replicated what he felt in clay with very little assistance from care staff.

Elliott didn't paint his work as colour is unimportant to him.

Elliott said: "I chose Shrek because he is a hero to many people. I have listened to the movie as I like to keep up to date with what is going on. I love sculpture as it's tactile and touch is really important to me. It also gives me independence."

Claire Royston, Elliott's mum said he is very good at charming people and tries to work around whatever obstacles are in his way. She also said he works really hard on being an interesting person, which is why he engages in sport and gardening as well as art.

Please note this case study (images and copy) must not be used or replicated in any other form without prior consent from Children's Hospices UK.

This artwork is a sculpture and measures approximately 150mm wide, by 150mm high, by 60mm deep.
