"Fran's Heroes"
My name is Fran and I am 20 years old. I have a condition called Leigh's disease.
The disease is degenerative and affects my metabolism and neurological functions. I am a fulltime wheelchair user now and I can no longer do anything for myself so I need 24 hour care. Three years ago I also lost my ability to speak but my mind still works so I use a communication board to spell out what I want to say. I am on lots of medication to help control the dystonia which is part of my condition. The medication also helps to control the pain but it also makes me feel that my brain is working in a ‘fog'.
I have been visiting Demelza for about six years. I love going there because the staff are friendly, funny and very supportive and I get to spend time with my friends. The time I get to spend at Demelza is really relaxing and it gives me a break from my family and vice versa.
I have chosen my family, (mum, Ron, Natalie, Georgina and David), as my heroes. They are loving, caring, kind, helpful, supportive and really positive. They are always there for me. I have also chosen a music therapist called Vicky. She is caring, helpful and positive and has helped me to express my feelings through music.
